Biosecurity Surveillance and Control
Biosecurity Surveillance and Control strengthens the Caribbean’s capacity to detect, prevent, and respond to biosecurity threats linked to wildlife crime. Activities include developing an integrated regional biosecurity strategy, establishing a coordinated surveillance network linking wildlife enforcement with public health and veterinary services, integrating biosecurity risk assessments into wildlife crime investigations, and enhancing quarantine measures at ports and borders. Additional actions focus on investing in advanced surveillance technologies, such as drones and biosensors, and promoting public awareness and community engagement to identify and report risks. Together, these measures protect biodiversity, ecosystems, and human health from the introduction and spread of invasive species and wildlife-related diseases.
In the CAR-WEN Strategic Plan, Biosecurity Surveillance and Control is described as an expanded operations strategy that bridges wildlife enforcement with biosecurity and public health objectives. It includes risk assessments, the development of early warning and rapid response systems, the application of advanced monitoring technologies, legal frameworks to ensure compliance, and targeted training for enforcement, customs, and community members. By integrating enforcement with biosecurity priorities, this strategy supports a comprehensive approach to preventing threats to people, wildlife, and ecosystems.
Looking ahead, building strong biosecurity systems will be essential for safeguarding the Caribbean against ecological and public health risks. Ongoing investment in technology, inter-agency collaboration, and public engagement will improve early detection and rapid response capabilities. By embedding biosecurity within regional wildlife enforcement, the Caribbean will be better equipped to prevent and mitigate threats, protecting both biodiversity and the communities that depend on it.
