Adapt the Open Standards to Support WEN Operations
Adapt the Open Standards to Support WEN Operations focuses on ensuring that the widely recognised Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation are tailored to meet the operational needs and values of Wildlife Enforcement Networks. Activities may include reviewing and revising the framework for relevance to WENs, integrating conservation and enforcement priorities, producing user-friendly implementation materials, establishing mechanisms for continuous feedback, and standardising information management and data-sharing protocols. By adapting the Open Standards to the realities of wildlife enforcement, this strategy makes them more practical, relevant, and supportive of effective action against wildlife crime.
The CAR-WEN Strategic Plan presents Adapt the Open Standards to Support WEN Operations as an external support strategy—an area where the CAR-WEN can help coordinate and provide input, but will rely on external partners for leadership and technical expertise. The Plan calls for a multi-stakeholder process to assess the current framework, identify gaps, integrate WEN values, and develop guidance materials such as templates, training manuals, and toolkits. The revised standards would then be supported by translation where needed, targeted training for members, and a feedback loop for ongoing refinement. By embedding WEN-specific needs and principles into the Open Standards, this strategy promotes consistency and strengthens operational effectiveness.
Looking ahead, adapting the Open Standards to better support WEN operations will create a more unified, efficient, and values-driven approach to conservation and enforcement planning. By working with global WENs, conservation organisations, and technical experts, this effort can bridge the gap between conservation theory and enforcement practice. Over time, widespread adoption of these adapted standards will improve planning, monitoring, and collaboration across WENs, contributing to more effective and coordinated responses to wildlife crime worldwide.
